Met a very interesting person during lunch. Since there were 2 extra chairs and he's alone, so he asked whether he could sit with us for him to finish his coffee. He's a doctor who uses a yellow screen N*kia phone. When he talked, I can stay there listening for hours. Like when my lecturer, Prof Salam are talking about food processing. 4 hours lecture per week ain't enough for me. I just love listening to anyone's experiences in food industry.
Oh, my..
I miss doing food thingy..
I miss the food lab.
I miss using HPLC.
I miss wearing my lab coat, the petri dish, the smell of Micro Lab..
Anyway, back to that person, he asked Joe about the food. Joe said it's fine.
Then he started telling us about vegies. On how contaminated the vegies are.
He made several tests on himself, his rabbit and his fish.
He gave this particular vegetable bought from this particular market to the rabbit and the fish. Just that vegetable and no other. A few months later, the fish died and the rabbit miscarried a few times.
Then, he noticed he suffered from migraine quite often. Then he realised, during that period of time, he often helped the wife washed the vegetables. But when he quit doing it, the migraine stopped. We're affected by washing the vegies alone.
He followed a group of researchers to test the pesticides level of contamination on vegetables at this wet market and not surprising, 90% is contaminated above the level allowed in Malaysia's Food Act 1983 plus uncontrolled use of Formaldehyde in fishes.
Pa once told me, if you went to Cameron Highlands, you will see those farmers plant a separate piece of land of vegetable for their consumption. And these vegetables are usually much smaller and less greener compare to the one you bought from them.
The food industry in Malaysia is totally out of hand. Because of rampant corruption? I dare not say. In strict countries like Australia and Singapore, foods are not allowed to come in unless they pass several food tests at the port. If the tests fail, then off the foods back to the shore regardless they have traveled thousands nautical.
Organic food?
True, they don't use pesticides or whatsoever when they plant them. But how about the land surrounded the organic plant area. When it rains, the soil is a lil bit affected with the soil that uses pesticides.
Have you ever been in a soy sauce factory? Aaa, I lost interest in soy sauce the moment I set eyes on that place.
If vegies are so contaminated right now because of the weak enforcement, should we plant our own vegies? Oh well, land is limited.
Can we survive on supplementary pills as replacement for vegies? Hmmm.. More research need to be done.
So, how do you find your food?

ayah nawal dulu rajin tanam sayur sendiri. so there was always a season where we always ate petola, long beans, even tomato (tak menjadi sangat) and even corn (saja try hahahah). bes and sonok.
